Life 3.0 –
Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
by Max Tegmark, Knopf, 2017 | First edition.
This is a book about AI, and readable by the layman (might I say gripping). It is about the ‘AI-safety’ research specialty (nowadays you cannot simply research AI, you need to specialize).
Tegmark is a renowned MIT professor, and is able to discuss his ideas with the likes of Larry Page and Elon Musk.
The book will not teach you how to develop an AI system, but it will give you a good idea of the nature of AI. The field is advancing by leaps and bounds, and has achieved amazing specialized AI such as a Go playing machine, but one cannot predict when we will have GAI ‘General Artificial Intelligence’. The time estimates vary wildly. Also, there is much discussion on a possible danger from GAI not sharing the goals of its creator (Elon is worried, Larry not so much).
How does this affect your kids’ careers? Tegmark has guidance on this.
Hardcover, 350 pages.
